I thought I would do a quick blog on the preparation for the new season ie coming out of winter and what it means to photographers.  First of all, we are all grateful that we can go outdoors, as many of us work outdoors as well as indoors.  As a wedding photographer in Scotland, I will be able to work outdoors for longer.  Also, the guests will stay outdoors as it will be warmer, well that is the theory anyway, not always the case in Scotland, mind you.  I can also continue more with my infrared photography in Scotland project as well as for landscape photography, with longer days and more foliage which is perfect for infrared, in addition to that rare thing in Scotland, sunshine.  Here are a few examples from my sister website www.edinburghphotographer.com, landscape and corporate photographer Edinburgh, Scotland (edinburghphotographer.com) and while I am at it, here are some from this website. Colin Wright Photography, Edinburgh and Glasgow conference photographer | Landscape

So what are the things we need to do to prepare for the new seasons:

Top tips to prepare for spring for photographers:

1. Give your gear a good going over, clean the lenses and get your wet weather lens covers ready and make sure your cameras and lenses are robust and working well.

2. Think of a few outdoor projects to do over the summer, ie a landscape photography trip.  This year I plan to visit the Isle of Skye and to go to Corpach, Lochaber, near Fort William to photograph the old boat wreck, in infrared.

3. Think outdoors as a landscape photographer and during wedding photography in Scotland, or other events such as conferences or sport.  Better use of the environment can be made in spring and summer.

4. Start to think of how the seasons affect the foliage and plant life, when the leaves appear on the trees, when flowers bloom, some flowers bloom at certain times of the year.

5. Pay more attention to weather forecasts, particularly if you are covering outdoor sports or weddings.  Sometimes you have a bit of a say in when to take outdoor wedding photography photos with the wedding couple, try and get this to coincide with better weather.

6. Consider doing things you would normally do indoors from an indoor perspective ie portrait photography and pet photography for instance.

7. Market and promote your photography to meet the seasons.  So as a conference photographer in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Scotland, I am looking to find clients all year round, although there is a dip over Christmas and January, also during the summer holidays.  Wedding photographers in Scotland have the opposite issue, with more events during the holiday period.  So you have to plan your marketing strategy accordingly.
