Hi Everyone

In todays blog I am going to be looking at how conference and event photographers in Scotland are approaching photographic assignments now, in light of new technological advancements.  Digital itself has revolutionised photography but the changes within digital itself have also changed the landscape considerably for conference photographers in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Scotland.  So for what it is worth, here are some of the main changes in technology affecting event photographers.

Technological changes affecting the conference photographer in Scotland

1. The ISO performance has improved remarkably enabling photographers to work in very low light without much noise creating more than useable photos at very high ISOs.  This means there is often no need to use flash and cheaper lenses can be used in low light situations, rather than forking out for expensive and fast lenses all the time.

2. The off camera flash systems are very sophisticated, versatile and more portable, enabling the photographer to move more freely and obtain high quality results on a regular basis.

3. The equipment is now smaller, with less need for long lenses and the smaller mirrorless cameras the same high quality as some of the larger DSLRs, giving the photographer more freedom to move about and also enabling him/her to blend in more in their surroundings without disrupting the event too much.

4. You can now wifi the images straight to your phone or pc and produce some photos for clients on the day, with the main photos to follow later.

5. Photos are now usually sent by a link, meaning they can be received a lot quicker and negating the need for burning DVDs or CDs.

6. Focussing is now far better with very good image stabilising and excellent eye detection for most cameras, making the job of the photographer easier and improving the quality.

7. You are now expected to take far more photos and supply the client with more images, this is a goods thing and can also enable the conference photographer to get more creative.

8. Silent shooting is one of the great advances.  I photographed a classical music concert recently and I would not have been able to do this properly without the new technological advances, particularly since the need to shoot without shutter noise was requested by the client.  This will also benefit conference photographers all over the country, as you won't be cringing every time you think your shutter has been heard by the presenters or the conference delegates.

So hope that helps, but it is also important to note that these technological changes only make the professional conference photographer in Edinburgh better and there will always be a need to compose effectively, use the light creatively and take bespoke wonderful images.  No amount of technological changes can make up for talent and training.
