As promised some more conference photography tips for all you budding conference and event photographers Edinburgh and Glasgow.  As a business and event photographer working in Edinburgh and around Scotland, I am often asked what the most important aspects are for conference photos and last week we concentrated on the preparation, this week we will look at some of the skills required and the equipment needed for conference photography.  So here are a few tips, more to follow on the next blog.

1. You will need a lens with at least a reach up to 200-300mm, although large sports event type lenses are just too heavy and intrusive for conferences and events.  
 

2. You also need a wide angle for group shots and large photos of the venue internally and externally.  At least 2 flashguns, or a flash gun and a portable studio flash, although you may not have the room for studio equipment.  I would also recommend some kind of flash diffuser, to reduce the harshness of the light.

3. Keep your gear to a minimum, take a tripod but you may not have the space or time to use it.  Keep the gear as small as possible.

4. You want photos of the speakers from all angles from a distance and also getting fairly close at an angle to capture the venue in the background.  It is also important to practice before the start of the event.

5. Take some photos of the event, exhibitions and signs advertising the organisations.

6. Make sure to ask if there is anyone who doesn’t want to get their photo taken.

7. Try and get creative with the photos, use a table or tripod and slow your shutter speed down to capture some motion blur, also try some strange angles.

8. If you are allowed to use flash, that’s great, but don’t use it all the time, it can irritate speakers and delegates if over-used.  This also applies to photos taken up close, take a few at the start then retreat to the back with a telephoto lens.
