Motorsport Photography Tips and Getting Ready for Weddings
Hi All
As some of you know, as a professional commercial photographer operating in and around Edinburgh, I also do motorsport photography in addition to my specialism of corporate conference photography in Scotland. The season for motorsport photography has started and part of this is photographing the Supercar events in East Fortune, Edinburgh and Fife. I also use this time to get some precious infrared Supercar photos at the event locations. However, today, I thought I would share a few Supercar tips with you all. So here they are:
1. This is the most important one, you must use a polarising filter, otherwise you will not be able to identify the drivers. You may as well go home without a polariser
2. Dress for bad weather, this is Scotland, you can’t take all the photos from your car, the best ones will be when you are more flexible and outdoors. This also goes for the sun, hat and sun tan lotion are essential, especially if you are outdoors for as long as 9 hours
3. Try out different angles and positions, crouch, stand up, try different speeds etc. You don’t want the client to get identical shots
4. Try some panning ie moving the camera and lens parallel with the subject, it creates a creative blurred background
5. It may sound obvious but if you neglect it, this can be what pushes you over the edge, especially if you are out for long periods - take plenty of food and juice, water etc, you may not get a break and the refreshments if there are any are likely to be expensive and or poor. Also and this is a must for me, headphones and music

Conference Photography in Edinburgh 5 new Tips
Hi All
As the conference photography season is upon us for all professional corporate photographers in Edinburgh and around Scotland, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share a few tips, shown below:
1. Get to know the main organiser as well as you can, before, during and after the event. Learn their needs and preferences. It is this key person who will employ you in the future
2. Taylor your photos according to the needs of the company, ie check previous brochures, internet photos ets and ask them what they want. Its no use photographing a lot of artistic black and white images if the organiser wants presenter shots in colour
3. To contradict what I just said, take risks, do something different, so you stand out from other photographers. I like to offer some corporate infrared photos to my client as an added extra and they usually love it
4. I have said this again and again, but don't overdo I, back-off once you have your photos, give people space. They may not re-employ you if they think you are a pest
5. Keep it simple when it comes to equipment. You will likely only use 2 lenses, even 1 sometimes. This also goes for flash modifiers, don't overdo the fancy equipment, find the best way and stick to it. Also, it decreases the chances of losing stuff

Infrared Photogrpahy in Scotland - More Tips by Professional Photographers - Scotland

Great weather for infrared photography in Scotland last week. Next week I have a conference photography commission in Glasgow, with the start of the motor sport photography season at the weekend in Fife. As a professional photographer out and about in Scotland, its always good to get back into the sports photography. What's not to love about photographing sport in Scotland. However, this week we will concentrate on more infrared photography tips. Some of the more left field ones this time, here they are below:
1. Watch out for the direction of light. The position of the sun is important. You need to keep checking your camera screen to see the intensity of light on the foliage.
2. Watch out for dark shaded areas. Unlike normal photography, large shaded areas will appear totally dark, with little dynamic range if there is no sunlight on the area in question.
3. The opposite of this argument is that shadows appearing as stripes, or with a detailed shape can look very creative, see attached photo.
4. Check your exposure and bracket. Exposure can be very tricky in infrared. Try over and under exposing, depending on the intensity and direction of light.
5. Watch out for flare ie bright white or purple and blue light, when you shoot into the sun, this is much worse in infrared than with normal photography.

Infrared Fine Art Photography - The Highland Cow project
Hi All
I am about to embark on a new project, to showcase some of my infrared photography in Scotland photography. Due to the success of the Highland Cow photos last year, I am now about to embark on a project to photograph Highland Cows in infrared. The aim, in between photographing events and corporate conferences around Edinburgh and Scotland, will be to visit as many locations in Scotland and photograph the great Highland Cow with the backdrop of the fantastic landscape we have here in Scotland. I will start at my favourite location of the Pentland Hills in Edinburgh, after the success of the Highland Cow in the snow photos last year, I took the opportunity of photographing highland cows in the snow at the Pentland Hills yesterday, you have to be quick, as it is pretty cold and also careful, these horns are pretty big and all it would take, is for the highland cow to move its head slightly and you could end up on the end of a horn. So here is a photos from yesterday, the aim was to get as much detail and contrast in the image as possible and also to get as close as I could without injury. As with all animal and wildlife photography, once the animals get used to you, they lose their fear. I have even started naming them now, this one is called Gerald.
As an active Edinburgh photographer, at this time of year the aim is to find projects close by, to minimise travel time in poor weather and this project along with other infrared photography will be my aim over the next few months- keep watching the website.
