Hi Everyone

I great night on saturday photographing the Annual Ball for Heriot Watt Chemistry students at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.  It was a cheerful event, with everyone having a good time, I almost wished I could have joined in.  A Ceilidh band and a disco later, they even played some music from my era, it wasn't yesterday, I can tell you that.  As with all corporate and event photography commissions, I always feel as a professional photographer working in and around Edinburgh, that I perform well if I am made to feel welcome and if I can have a laugh with the participants and this was the case on saturday.  There were some real characters and they are always good to photograph.  The organisers also let me shoot reportage photography most of the night, which is great, as it is my strong point.  I also had a Godox off camera flash on a stand for posed pictures in the corner of the dance floor.  Then there are the dance shots, always enjoyable to photograph - some of the dance photos are also on my website.  I enjoy these kind of photoshoots, as they are perfect for capturing candid photography moments.  I tend to treat these events just like I would a corporate conference photography assignment in Edinburgh, photographing the key people, capturing moments and generally and this is the most important thing - making sure my photographs tell the story of the day.

I look out the window and the sun is shining, with some clouds, so I think it is time for some infrared photography in my home County of East Lothian.  Speak soon.

Hi all

Taking advantage of a quiet week last week to get some stock and fine art photography from my home city of Edinburgh.  Most professional photographers have periods where they concentrate on certain areas of work and as a professional commercial photographer operating around Edinburgh, I try and get as much infrared and urban photography as possible, in addition to selling the work I completed in the summer.  This is sometimes more difficult than it sounds as the weather can be a bit rubbish at this time of the year in Scotland.  However on Friday it was perfect for infrared photography around 10am.  While infrared photographers rightly emphasise sun and trees for dramatic images, you can also add shadows to this equation and they were reflecting brilliantly on on the buildings on Friday, shadows in infrared can result in some dramatic shots, they also work well on grass.  The other aspect of Infrared Photography that is often overlooked, is that you can create realistic black and white images, that are not obviously infrared.  I have sold fine art images to hotels who wanted black and white photography on their walls.  Unless there are trees and grass present it isn’t always obvious they have been taken with an infrared converted camera.  Oh and another essential ingredient in the winter for infrared, beside sunlight, is an interesting sky - see the attached photo.

So as a professional photographer operating in Scotland, I also have some food photography in Edinburgh and a student event photography assignment at the Corn Echange in Edinburgh.
