Top Tips for an Event Photographer in Scotland
Hi Everyone
I thought with the extension of the lockdown that this would be a good time to look at some top tips for event photography. For the purposes of this blog we will keep it general, so that the advice can apply to all types of events, from weddings to gala days or graduation photography. Whilst as a professional corporate and event photographer working in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland, I also do a fair amount of sports photography, we won’t include this today, staying with corporate and general public photography events.
So here we go:
1 Always be prepared and if at all possible check out the venue before hand, so you know how to get there and where the best shooting positions will be
2. Take note of the time of day when you will be required, this is very important for outdoor events and will effect the photos in a big way, it is up to you to overcome any lighting issues, but try and anticipate them in advance
3. Communicate regularly with the organisers and establish a good relationship with them before the event
4. Be friendly and helpful at all times, otherwise you may not be asked back
5. Make sure all your gear is ready, ie batteries fully charged and ready, with back up for all important equipment
6. Know the timings inside out and write them down
7. Always photograph what you are asked to do ,but add your own creative stuff. They will nearly always like it, even if it’s not what they were expecting.
8. Practice in advance in your head the shots you are going to take and try them out before the start of the event
9. Dont panici if you don’t get the good shots at the start, they will come, it can take a while to get going, but just make sure you catch the key moments
10. Keep smiling, it always helps and remember you are getting paid to do something you love

Tips for Photographing Cars by Event and Fine Art Photographer, Edinburgh Colin Wright
Hi Everyone
With the lockdown seriously effecting photography commissions at the moment, I thought this would be a good time to start a new Tips for Photography today.
As a professional event and corporate photographer operating in Scotland, I have undertaken many commissions which involved photographing cars, from supercar events, to vintage cars and scrapyard and general car photos as part of my infrared in Scotland project. I thought this would be a good time to give you some tips on photographing cars. To keep it simple I will concentrate on outdoor photos without any flash or artificial light and I promise not to get too technical. So here we go:
1. Its all about the weather, stormy skies, or sunny days with with blue skies and cloud are ideal, especially for infrared photography
2. Dont be frightened to get in close when shooting a stationary vehicle
3. Keep an eye out for interesting close up detail, especially for vintage and scrap cars
4. Its not always the supercars that are best to photograph, scrap cars and old wrecks often have bags of character
5. Vary your angle, get down low if possible and include interesting backdrops ie trees, sky etc, otherwise, avoid clutter in the backround
6. Use a tripod if you want good depth of field
7. Cars are a great way to showcase other genres such as architecture, weddings, urban photography etc
8. Use people in the photo if relevant ie a driver or someone behind the story of the car
9. Shoot through the window, sometimes the interior of the cars can be interesting
10. If shooting moving vehicles, change your angle, get down low and high and pan your photos now and again to get some motion blur

Newspaper and PR Photography tips, by Colin Wright, Professional Photographer Edinburgh
Hi All
in a previous life, I was a newspaper photographer, supplying photos to publications around the borders, East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh, Scotland. Whilst the market for this type of photography is much reduced, I still do it occasionally and more importantly, I think it has helped me greatly in my event and conference photography commissions around Scotland.
Here are a few reasons why it has helped me and these can also be interpreted as tips for the aspiring newspaper photographer:
1. You need to work fast and react to a very tight timetable. I was often asked to attend numerous football and rugby games all happening at the same time, after a morning of other photoshoots on my daily rota
2. You need to be able to photograph a variety of different subjects in a short space of time ie sport, gala days, neighbour disputes, architecture
3. You have to be able to adapt to using limited equipment, you cant lug around lots of gear or risk leaving it in your car all the time
4. You have to be good with people, ie accommodate them, listen and try to get the best out of them, use your charm and humour
5. You must edit and send the photos as soon as possible, if not on the go through wifi, then immediately when you get home. There is not time for complicated editing either, keep it simple
