Tips for Music Photography by event photographer Edinburgh Colin Wright
Hi Everyone
So today I am going to briefly look at some essential tips for music photographers in Scotland. To be honest, you should just think of music photography as a kind of event photography, as the same rules apply, so as a starter I will detail the tips below and expand on the issues in the weeks to come under future blogs. So here we go:
1. Know the genre of music, when the key moments will be the general rules for the musicians and the audience ie keep your camera on silent shutter mode for classical concerts, although not necessary for others is when I photographed Midstock, Midstock 23 | midstock (midstockfestival.com)
there was no need for silent shooting but there is at a school classical concert for instance.
2. Its all about position, try and get in the centre of you are not allowed to move around. As always vary your angles etc.
3. Photograph the the artists close up and with the band or backing performers.
4. Get photos of the crowd, this is try for all event photographers in Scotland and also applies to sport big style.
5. Take close-ups of the instruments.
6. Remember and capture the emotions before, ie the nerves and after the relief and applause etc.
7. Obey the rules, if you are told not to move around then keep as quiet as possible. It is also important not to spoil the enjoyment of the others in the crowd.
8. As with all professional photographers in Scotland, be polite and knowledgeable but also firm with clients and the crowd, your job is to come away with great photos, if they put you in a corner with a poor view, explain the you can't work miracles.
9. Vary your focal length ie telephoto, wide angle if possible and try and include as many of the performers as possible.
10. Enjoy the photoshoot and the music.

The most important consideration for the professional event photographer in Scotland
Hi Everyone
I was once part of a photography discussion and the subject matter was, what is the most important aspect of photography. Now in a room full of professional photographer, most of them event photographers in Edinburgh, then you knew you were going to be in for a lively debate. Some of the usual suspects were suggested, like subject matter, technical ability, sharpness, correct focussing, good equipment, light and composition but I always feel that these are things which assist the photographer, the tools he or she requires.
Capturing the moment
When I am photographing a conference in Glasgow, or working as an event photographer in Edinburgh, I am looking to capture the moment, this will always involve emotions, however, yes, you will have to use all your skills, mentioned above to make this happen, but the essence is that you must create an image that freezes that moment in time, looks brilliant technically and is focussed correctly but you only need these other factors if you have captured the moment.
Sports Photography
This is illustrated with sports photography ie the goal, the crowd going mad during a celebration, the emotions of joy when the captain lifts the cup and this is why you will see sports and general event photographers in Scotland, keeping their gear ready at all times, as sometimes the best photo you are going to get will not be the ball going over the line, remember the famous Eric Cantona photo at the Man Utd Crystal Palace match https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-eric-cantona-kick-20466384. One of my best ever sports photos was from a rugby match at Murrayfield where i captured perfectly the celebrating crowd, another was of an image of a well liked young footballer scoring a goal, a year or two before he tragically passed away far too early, so you know if is all about capturing the moment.
Unique Photographer
So if I could choose one other important aspect of photography, what would it be. Well the one thing always try to be as an event photographer in Scotland, is unique, ie to try to be different to all the rest. This is challenging today with all the images around us but it is still vital. We can all copy artists, but you need to develop your own style. I for one don't want to go and watch a tribute band of Quean, that sound and look like them, if I wanted to see the band I would have gone to see the real thing, or something completely different. By all means be inspired and motivated by other photographers, but dont copy, learn and develop your own style.

Preparing for event and corporate photography in Edinburgh Glasgow and Scotland
Hi Everyone
Today we are going to look at how corporate conferences and event photographers in Edinburgh and Glasgow should be preparing for the day. First of all you will have had conversations with the client by email and they will let you know what is expected of you on the day, this can relate to a number of things such as when to send the photos, the format, size etc. you have to make sure that you will deliver as the client requests and then some more. When I am photographing a conference in Edinburgh for instance, I will think of something different I can offer the client over and above the brief. This could be some infrared photos additional shots at different angles etc.
Before the event I will check out the location for potential photo opportunities. I will also establish a dialogue with the people who run the venues, this will make everything easier on the day. Then I will research previous publications the organisation has, to see what kind of photos were used and I will endeavour to do it even better. Then I will ensure all my gear is ready, picking every piece of equipment I will need and doubling the number of batteries and cameras, in case of emergencies, oh and remember to take 2 flashes. I remember hearing a colleague who was a photographer at a conference in Glasgow, who had his flash packed in on him at the start of the event, all the remaining photos had to be taken in natural light at a poorly lit venue.
Then just before the event, test out all the gear and do a final plan for the day, this is particularly important if there are specific times you have to keep in mind like for wedding photography or a conference photography event in Scotland with speakers and politicians attending.
