Just back from some newspaper photography in Midlothian, Scotland and a corporate conference photoshoot in Edinburgh, so I thought I would stick with the Corporate Photography theme for now. As a conference photographer in Edinburgh and around Scotland, I have a certain routine and there are a few "must do" aspects that are key to all jobs. The list below could apply to corporate photographers and general event photography, but, as a specialist conference photographer in Scotland, I have tailored it a bit for business conferences. So here we go:-
1. Prepare in advance. This may seem obvious but the pre-event preparation is essential, take plenty of charged batteries, more than twice you will require, for flash, cameras etc. Always prepare your back up equipment, yes, that means 2 of everything and make sure it is all working. It never fails to amaze me when I see a photographer with one flash or camera. Check location, access, parking traffic. Do all this a few days before, to give yourself plenty of time if something isnt working. Think of the worst thing that could happen on your journey ie car breaking down, train delay and leave in plenty of time. You can be late for your own wedding, but you cannot be late for a photography commission
2. Record to multiple cards If your camera has this facility, make use of it, cards can suddenly stopped working and imagine losing a days work. If you don't have this facility, don't use one card all day, switch cards, so in the unlikely event of one not working, it wouldn't be the end of the world, especially if you are using 2 cameras. Lose a whole days work and you may as well leave the country. If you are staying overnight, you should always back up your work on a laptop or other device
3. Find out what you can and cant do in advance Always check with the event organiser if the delegates are OK with flash usage, or if anyone has objected to their photo being taken at the event. When you get there, although there is a temptation to bang away on the flash, do it sparingly and not for the full duration of the speaker's presentation. Also try to gauge the atmosphere from both the speaker and the crowd and give them some peace, if you feel that's what they want at that time. This also applies to workshops. Get the balance right. You must deliver great images for the clients, but it wont help your business if the delegates complain
4. Lenses to Use This is a personal thing, but I use a 28-70mm most of the time, with a 70-200mm for longer shots. During workshops I tend to use a smaller mirrorless camera, so I can keep in the background, without disturbing the participants. Dont walk about looking like a paparazzi, with large lenses and multiple cameras, this wont go down well at conferences. There are other lenses you can use, but there is no point in going over the top. Try to keep in the background as much as you can
5. Get both Standard and Creative Images on the day First and foremost, make sure you get the standard images the client has asked for ie the speakers, any group shots, networking etc. But after that, try different angles, move about, catch people networking, just at the right moment, when they are animated and enthusiastic. Set you camera on a tripod and get some motion photos. The scope is endless

A good week with another very enjoyable NHS Education for Scotland training corporate event photography commission in Edinburgh at the COSLA offices. Some interesting workshops and lots of scope for creative photographs. Thanks again to the NES staff for their help and making me feel welcome. I had my last motorsport photography event in Lochgelly, Scotland, until the new season next year. We were incredibly lucky with the weather once again for November, with no rain for 2 days, pretty cold mind you on friday, but I can live with that. I have attached a photo from a previous motorsport event at East Fortune from last week.
This is a busy time for me with conference photography in Edinburgh and Scotland and these events keep me going until Christmas. Each year, I enjoy the challenge of event photography and as a specialist corporate event photographer in Scotland, I am always on the lookout for fresh ideas, angles and perspectives. I really enjoy conference photography and each one is different. I am off to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) in Edinburgh on tuesday, with more newspaper photography in Midlothian Scotland at the weekend. Still a few trees left and decent light for the ocassional infrared photography in Scotland, but the light is fading fast.

The end of another busy week, with some motor sports photography in East Fortune, Scotlandcold but fairly good weather for November. Also, a commercial event photographer in Scotland, I attended a conference in Edinburgh. Next week is much about the same with more motorsport photography, this time in Fife. I am reducing the amount of infrared photography in Scotland, at this time of year for weather considerations, although I will still continue. There are always infrared subjects to photograph all year round , when the sun shines.
This week, I am away to a conference in Edinburgh with NHS Education for Scotland, always good to see the guys again at 102 West Port. As a specialist conference photographer in Scotland, I thrive on regular events, especially in locations I am familiar wit and I used to work in the building I will visit on thursday.

As an event photographer in Scotland, I have a varied timetable. This week I was at a corporate conference in Edinburgh, great to meet my friends at NHS Education for Scotland again and an enjoyable day was had at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. I am off to a supercar event on friday and saturday and I have some conference photography in Edinburgh a few days later. Last week I had a very enjoyable presentation on seascape photography at North Berwick Camera club. I am not a natural public speaker but it was an an informal and relaxed evening and I hope the members learned something from my brief presentation. i also gave a short talk on my infrared photography in Scotland. Finally, I ended the week with some newspaper/PR photography in Midlothian. It was a good day, ending with a good photo of the Bonnyrigg Rose equaliser in their cup match, and I have attached this sports photography image to this blog.
Also looking forrward to some wedidng photography in Edinburgh next week.

Hi Everyone
A busy week again, with the last few shots of infrared photography in Scotland, utilising the leaves on the trees while we still have them, although I will still find plenty of subjects for infrared photos in the winter., a recent infrared photos is attached. I was at a supercar event at Lochgelly, photographing fast cars on friday and saturday, I even had a scary ride as a passenger on a Lotus, maybe I will post a video of me looking terrified. Of to Edinburgh for a corporate photography conference event on thursday for NHS Education for Scotland, looking forward to that. Then I will be attending North Berwick Camera club to give a presentation on seascape photography. I am particularly looking forward to this and very grateful to the club for inviting me. As a wedding photographer in Scotland, the week finishes with a wedding in East Lothian, then some newspaper photography in Midlothian on saturday.
