Tips for Conference Photographers Edinburgh Glasgow Scotland

September 20, 2022  •  Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone

As promised some more conference photography tips for all you budding conference and event photographers Edinburgh and Glasgow.  As a business and event photographer working in Edinburgh and around Scotland, I am often asked what the most important aspects are for conference photos and last week we concentrated on the preparation, this week we will look at some of the skills required and the equipment needed for conference photography.  So here are a few tips, more to follow on the next blog.

1. You will need a lens with at least a reach up to 200-300mm, although large sports event type lenses are just too heavy and intrusive for conferences and events.

2. You also need a wide angle for group shots and large photos of the venue internally and externally.  At least 2 flashguns, or a flash gun and a portable studio flash, although you may not have the room for studio equipment.  I would also recommend some kind of flash diffuser, to reduce the harshness of the light.

3. Keep your gear to a minimum, take a tripod but you may not have the space or time to use it.  Keep the gear as small as possible.

4. You want photos of the speakers from all angles from a distance and also getting fairly close at an angle to capture the venue in the background.  It is also important to practice before the start of the event.

5. Take some photos of the event, exhibitions and signs advertising the organisations.

6. Make sure to ask if there is anyone who doesn’t want to get their photo taken.

7. Try and get creative with the photos, use a table or tripod and slow your shutter speed down to capture some motion blur, also try some strange angles.

8. If you are allowed to use flash, that’s great, but don’t use it all the time, it can irritate speakers and delegates if over-used.  This also applies to photos taken up close, take a few at the start then retreat to the back with a telephoto lens.

So that’s all for now, more tips to follow on workshop photography at conferences and award ceremonies at corporate events in Edinburgh and Glasgow and throughout Scotland.

Until next time.

Kind Regards

Colin

Conference and business photography, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scotland

Hi Everyone

As a professional corporate, event and business photographer, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scotland, I am often asked what the most important aspects of photographing a conference are and whilst there is no substitute for practice, there are a number of things you can focus on - if you pardon the pun. So as I have just launched my new page, which which has been showcasing my conference photographs, I will be doing a number of extra blogs which contain 5 tips for corporate, conference and event photography.  Today we will start with preparation, so here are my first of my top 5 tips for conference photography below:

1. Get plenty of practice, before you go on a paid commission, volunteer to cover any kind of event, to get you used to the pressures ie the demands, timelines etc,  Its better to make mistakes before people are paying good money for you to provide a bespoke conference photographer service.

2. Have lots of dialogue to get to know the organisers before the event, so you know exactly what to expect long before you arrive.  Then go over a list of the things they require ie keynote speakers, arrival of main speaker etc and other timelines, also things like, who doesn't want there photo taken etc.

3. Check out the lighting thoroughly when you ge there and speak with the lighting engineers if you get a chance. They will want it to be as dark as possible, you want as much light as they will allow you to photograph the speakers and delegates, ask if you can let some natural light in, some will let you, others won't unfortunately.

4. Prepare all your gear in advance, check the batteries, allow of at least 2 of everything, camera, flash etc and test all your gear thoroughly.

5. Prepare your journey, so you arrive in plenty of time.  You want to be arriving at least an hour before the event, make sure you allow for any disasters ie late train, car breakdown etc.  Have a taxi number handy just in case.  You can not be late for a photography commission.

Hope that helps, next we will be looking at the essential aspects of the photoshoot.

So, until next time.

Kind Regards

Colin

Conference Photographer Edinburgh, Scotland, a Selection of Photos

September 12, 2022  •  Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone

For this weeks blog I am concentrating on my conference photography photos.  Being a professional event, corporate and conference photographer, working in Edinburgh, Glasgow and throughout Scotland, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new page on the website highlighting some of my best conference photography images throughout my career as a freelance photographer in Scotland and the North of England.  Conference photography means a lot to me.  It is probably my favourite commission and is responsible for most of my photo earnings throughout the years.  To mark this I have included a selection of photos taken in various locations, including images of Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, Gordon Brown and some of the world’s health and environmental experts.  I love the buzz from conference photography, the challenge of working in different types of venues, with varying lighting.  The importance of good timing for award ceremonies waiting on the arrival of politicians and key speakers and the need to forge good relationships with the clients.  So hope you enjoy the photos.  Some more concerned photography tips coming up soon.

Until next time.

Kind Regards

Colin
