The Art of Realistic Black and White Infrared PhotographyHi All A quick blog from your ever intrepid professional event and landscape photographer from around Edinburgh. A break from the conference and corporate photography in Scotland and time for some infrared photos from Portobello in Edinburgh. Today I am going to talk about realistic infrared photos. If I hadn't told you the attached photo was infrared photography, you would never have known. Sometimes infrared photography, through using a converted camera, can be a good way of creating a very contrasty image with a high structure content to it. This is partly because infrared highlights which ordinary cameras are unable to detect and all you have to do is to convert the image to black and white and up the contrast and structure and you have a really dynamic black and white photograph. This means that infrared converted cameras can be very useful for landscape photography and while I like to do some whacky colour stuff, I also like realistic black and white images taken with an infrared converted camera. Of course it depends on the filter you have in your converted infrared camera, although even some of the filters designed for colour infrared can also create good black and white images. The best filter is a 720, which is not so good for colour infrared but great for black and white stuff. Anyway, its goodbye from me until next time. Some conference photography in Edinburgh next week and supercar motor sport at the weekend. All the best. Regards Colin
