I have been shooting a lot of infrared photography in Scotland these days.  I am also half way through completing a manuscript for a book on infrared photography showcasing image in and around Scotland.  I thought I would look at a few myths of the genre.  Every type of photography has its cliched aspects and infrared is no different.  As a corporate event photographer in Scotland, people also have stereotypical ideas, particularly in relation to wedding photography and it is our job as photographers, to provide the public with an alternative modern view of photography.  In relation to infrared, I once had a client who loved my infrared work but was a bit wary of distributing it on the walls of his hotel, as it may have been too over the top with the white trees and weird spooky contrasting scenes.  Whilst this type of infrared photo can be created, the converted infrared camera can also be used to produce contrasty high dynamic range black and white photos that fit into a more conventional photographic genre. I particularly like using my infrared camera for this purpose. A converted infrared camera is after all, a very good specialist black and white camera - see what you think of the photo attached to this blog, only close inspection of the grass gives away that it is infrared.  Even colour infrared can be used in a realistic manner, depending on the filter you use, it can be a way of bringing out the blues in the sky and creating a nighttime effect.  Of course, I also like doing totally over the top infrared in both colour and black and white, but that's the subject of another blog.
