Today I am going to be looking at considerations for organisations about to hire a corporate event photographer in Scotland.  Most photographers should be able to do a wide range of photography, but they probably specialise in one area of work, for me as a conference and event photographer in Edinburgh and Glasgow, I tend to focus, if you will excuse the pun, on awards events, conferences and wedding photography in Scotland, however, I have worked in a wide range of photographic genres and I think this is important for companies choosing an event photographer in Scotland.  Experience as a newspaper photographer in Scotland for 10 years gave me a good grounding in general photography, it was also vital in enabling me to respond to unexpected crisis at any given time and this can also be very useful at conferences and events.  As a landscape photographer I am able to photograph effectively outdoors and I can provide a quality image of the building and guests outdoors, I can also supply infrared photographs in addition the images I already provide.   The position for wedding photographers is similar, they should also be versatile and able to take on a variety of work to enable them to respond to the unexpected.  A good wedding photographer nowadays will also be able to do fashion photography.  Sports photographers in Scotland will also be able to adapt their skills to events.  In fact you tend to find there are 2 different types of photographers, those who work in a controlled environment ie studio photographers who set up lighting and create artificial props and backgrounds for the photoshoot and uncontrolled environment photographers, who deal with the situation as it is without having any control over what happens next or the lighting for that matter.

So should I hire a general photographer for our conference in Edinburgh.

Well that depends on your event or need for the photography, I would say yes for conference and event photography, weddings and PR work, but for still life, portrait or food photography for instance, you may be fine with a specialist.
