Today I am going to look at the connections between different genres of photography.  As you may know this is a subject I have examined before.  Although an event photographer Edinburgh Scotland will cover a wide range of events, however, I think most photographers specialise.  A conference photographer in Edinburgh for instance can also be an event photographer in Glasgow and this can include events such as Awards ceremonies in addition to conference photography in Glasgow, but what does the sports photographer have in common with the conference and event photographer.  having previously worked as a sports photographer for newspapers in the Lothian area for 9 years, I covered a wide range of photographic genres but i feel my sports photography helped me as a conference photographer in Scotland and here is why:

1. The sports photographer has to react quickly to unexpected situations, this is also true for the conference photographer - people may not turn up, they may arrive late, or you may be asked to take a quick portrait photo either indoors or outdoors.

2. You have to work with the light you have.  Although you may have some influence on the light, usually venues differ greatly and the conference organiser will want to dim the lights to an extent for slideshows and presentations, so you have to work with that.  Likewise I have covered indoor sports and football outdoors in all kind of light, also in Scotland, the outdoor light can change in seconds.

3. You have to look for special moments outwith the standard images you are asked to produce ie emotion, celebrations etc.  The golden rule after you have captured the goal at a football match is to catch the celebrations and the crowd, don't just put your camera down, satisfied that you got the goal.

4. if you can, you should move about and change your angle.  You may have some restrictions at professional sports events but always move about and change your viewpoint if possible, even crouching down to frame your subject from the ground can help.  This applies to all event photography to be honest.

5. You have to establish a relationship with the performers. If you get a chance before the event, introduce yourself.  Don't stand to close to presenters and don't ever get in the way of the athletes, respect them but try and get a rapport with them if possible. This is more achievable at small local events than high profile professional football matches.  For instance the players at my local football ground know me often interact with me during the game while I am taking sports photos.
