As a conference photographer in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Scotland, I am often asked what other types of photography I do and not a lot of people know this but I am also a well regarded infrared photographer in Scotland and have been exhibiting and selling infrared photographs for around 8 years now. 

When can you shoot infrared photography in Scotland

As an infrared photographer in Scotland, I am often asked the above question and the answer is all year round.  Whilst we all want to photograph foliage and trees at their best in the spring, summer and early autumn, there are still some left even well into winter.  Lack of sunlight is also an issue and this will limit your photo time after October certainly.  However all is not lost and here is a list reasons you can photograph all year round.

Photographing infrared out out of season

1. Remember your infrared camera is a high dynamic range black and white camera all year round, as long as there is some daylight you will still be able to take high dynamic range images all year round that will be better than a normal camera.

2. There are other subjects that render themselves well to photographing in infrared such as metallic objects ie cars, old planes etc.  Another good subject is wood and water reflections work well in infrared. You can utilise these locations more out of season.  Most locations will also be quieter in the winter and that is what we all want, most of the time anyway, when photographing infrared.

3. Try other things out of season.  I have used my infrared camera outdoors, as a conference photographer in Edinburgh Scotland, in addition to photographing infrared as a wedding photographer Scotland.  Just get out there and experiment.  So photograph your dog and family on the garden.

4. Architecture renders itself to dramatic photographs in infrared.  The contrast in the sky is more effective in infrared and the blues after editing will result in a final image with deep blacks, that would take you more time to achieve in editing a normal image.

5. Winter is the time to experiment in your settings and for editing earlier images you have taken.  Some converted cameras allow you to adjust the white balance, you can also try different exposures and settings, or even using filters.  I like to use a polarising filter to deepen the blacks and help with reflections, but feel free to try anything.

So hope the above helps.  Infrared photography is not just for the summer.  It can be used as an event photographer in Edinburgh, or a corporate photographer Glasgow, jus use your imagination.
