A quick blog today on the subject of event photography, or more to the point low light music and theatre photography.  I had the pleasure of a photoshoot earlier on in the week at Pitlochry Festival Theatre for an Edinburgh Fringe Festival play due to premier next month.  So wha are we trying to capture when we are involved in theatre photography in Scotland. So for all budding event and theatre photographers Edinburgh and throughout Scotland, here is a list of tips for consideration.

Tips for theatre photographers Edinburgh:

1. You will be working in low low light and unless this is just a rehearsal, you won’t be able to use flash, so use a high ISO, as high as your camera can cope with, without much grain showing.

2. Get as close as you can with a telephoto lens if necessary, try and get facial expressions.

3. Eye focus is essential for theatre photography.

4. Change your angles to get interesting photos and move around if you can.

5. Ensure you communicate well with the actors.

6. Try not to take too long, if you do the actors may tire, which will effect their expressions in the photos.

7. Try and get shots with natural backgrounds with props and a theatrical black background.

8. Finally, enjoy, in my opinion this is one of the more enjoyable commissions for the event photographer in Scotland.
