Hi Everyone

One of the things I have found about this strange time as a professional corporate and event photographer based in Scotland is that I had to find other things to photograph, particularly since I am a specialist conference photographer and there hasn't been a conference for over a year now.  So what did I do, for one, I couldn't travel to the same extent, so I concentrated on my local area and more importantly I adapted my projects to may daily routines.  As you will know I have an ongoing project relating to infrared photography and I have managed to use this genre in unusual ways, so if I am going to take my boy to a skateboard park, I will photograph him in infrared.  Likewise any insect shots and spring photos of chick hatchings in Dunbar have been taken in infrared, sometimes the results are fairly striking, so it is worth it in the end.  Often I am looking to create something surreal in a typical infrared way, however sometimes it will be difficult to tell that the shot was taken in infrared and all you will be left with is a high contrast black and white photo with excellent dynamic range.

So onwards and upwards.  Now that things are moving a bit, I will be photographing conferences in Scotland soon.  However, I will continue with my local infrared project.

Hi Everyone

As most of my professional photography has been concerned with infrared photography recently due to the pandemic affecting corporate and event photography commissions around Scotland, so I thought this would be a good time to reflect on how infrared photography has changed in recent years.  of course the biggest change has been the move away from infrared film to digital cameras and an even larger influence, has been the ability to convert digital cameras to shoot entirely in infrared, without the need for a tripod, by removing the internal protective infrared light filter from the cameras and replacing it with either a specific infrared filter or leaving you with a full spectrum camera (able to shoot a variety of infrared images with filters).  The main thing has been the ability to stroll around without a tripod and experiment. In the past, infrared film was expensive and often a bit of a hit or miss depending on the developing and exposure of the image, now photographers can try out all sorts of things.  I have used infrared for sports photography, weddings, architecture and many other corporate photography commissions around Scotland, this could never have happened in the past.  Photoshop and other software such as DXO filters have also enhanced all the special effects created by infrared and has given the photographers a range of choices for the final image to create eye catching images for fine art purposes, or just to have a black and white photo with brilliant dynamic range.  My biggest sales over the last 5 years for landscape and fine art have been in infrared.

It is also a hugely enjoyable genre and offers all sorts of creative possibilities. So its not all about white trees and forests.  This doesn't even touch on the use of infrared imagery for medical and forensic purposes.

Hi Everyone

As I prepare for a possible move away from East Lothian to East Dunbartonshire, I can reflect on the 15 years I have spent in East Lothian and what a brilliant place it is for professional photographers to live and work.  Whilst most of my paid photography commissions involve corporate PR and conference photography around Scotland, I also do landscape and infrared fine art photography in East Lothian and Scotland and this location has been ideal.  However, whilst I will miss the area and the convenient closeness to the coastal areas, it will be good for me to relocate and move out of my comfort zone.  You tend to repeat yourself if located in the one place, especially recently without the ability to travel.  Moving nearer to Glasgow will provide me with the opportunity to update my urban photography images and there is no better city than Glasgow.  I will also be more central and closer to the Highlands and Islands and Stirling, not to mention the Campsie Fells and Loch Lomond and I will still be within shouting distance of Edinburgh.  All in all, more central for photographic commissions in Scotland.

So onwards and upwards.
