Good to get back into things at the weekend photographing a football match at Kirkintilloch near Glasgow.  As a professional corporate and event photographer working in Edinburgh, Glasgow and around Scotland, it is important that you keep taking photographs at all times, including during vacations and periods of I’ll health and after a second bout of covid, I am now back into the full swing of things and looking forward to some corporate and fine art photography commissions around Scotland, so it was great to do my first football photoshoot for a few months and get a chance to photograph Kirkintilloch Thistle at their last home game of the season, in what has been a good one for them.  
 

One of the things I wanted to chat about is the importance of positioning in sports photography.  It’s often not your fault and you can be limited through time or restrictions.  In rugby it is not as important as the action tends to stay in one area for a while and you can move about a bit more, if you are allowed, according to where the game is concentrated.  I think the best position at football is near the corner flag, just a few metres in to give you site of the goals and I was busy getting some good shots on Saturday, including 3 goals.  However, for a free kick, this restricts the subject you will photograph and only lets you see the goal posts and net, or the striker, not the drama of the situation.  This was where I was situated when one of the Kirki players scored a 25 yard free kick and there was nothing I could do about it.  The best place to stand would have been around the halfway line, so you can catch the ball and the wall jumping, as it is in mid flight before it goes in the net or just as it strikes the net.  Never mind I still caught a decent image of the ball hitting the net and the keeper looking at it.   Next time I will be sprinting to the half way line.
