Hi Everyone

This blog is a bit different than most of my previous ones.  I was asked the other day by a client if I ever get the opportunity to switch off and leave my camera behind.  Now as a professional corporate photographer working in Scotland who mostly spends his time photographing conferences and events, or fine art photography, you would think I would welcome the opportunity for a rest but not only do I automatically take my camera wherever I go for fear of missing an unexpected opportunity, I also welcome the opportunity to document the life of my family and the world around me. plus I love taking photographs and would prefer to do this than anything else in my free time.  I think you have to be like this in this profession, which can be competitive, seasonal and financially challenging - you need the joy of taking photographs to compensate for the difficult times.  Photography is also in a very interesting stage of rapid development at the moment and this can be very interesting for photographer, an example of this is the ability to convert cameras to make it easier to shoot infrared photography.  There are also purely infrared cameras being developed, but this is the subject of another blog.

As a conference photographer working in Scotland, I also like to keep my eyes open for new composition ideas when I am out and about, even attending events in my free time.  The other day I was at a concert and having done some freelance music photography in the past, although I was not allowed to take photos at the event, I was thinking how I would make effective use of the light and what would be the best composition, even when I was there watching the concert.  I will also take my camera on holiday with me, particularly when you visit places you may never have the chance to see again and before anyone says you can just use your phone, well that is OK as a last resort, but if you want something higher quality and a bit different, then you can't beat a camera.

The photo attached to this blog was taken in my free time during a day trip with my kids and also combines my love for infrared photography.

So anyway, there you have it.  Never stop thinking about photography unless you are asleep, and even then, you may even dream about cameras.

Hi Everyone

I have recently moved to the West of Scotland in East Dunbartonshire and although it has been difficult leaving the coast in East Lothian, in Scotland, particularly having that immediate source of photographs when the weather permits, I also think it is very important for landscape photographers to keep finding fresh locations.  I am now nearer places like the Kelpies, South Queensferry, Stirling, Loch Lomond and Glasgow and I plan to take advantage of these locations for my landscape and infrared photography.  This will help freshen up my portfolio and website and give me a new perspective for my photography.  This also applies to conference photography in Edinburgh, Glasgow and throughout Scotland and I hope to get some new event commissions in Stirling and Glasgow to add to my selection of Edinburgh conference images.  This can make a tremendous difference to your website.  All it takes is to build up new contacts and recommendations in different locations and I am working on this now.  So anyone out there who has a conference or event in the West of Scotland, please get in touch.  I can offer considerable experience of corporate and event photography throughout Scotland and the North of England.  Of course, it goes without saying I am also still available and looking forward to photography commissions in Edinburgh, as its just down the road.

Hi Everyone

I have some significant developments to report on my infrared photography in Scotland project.  I have purchased a new 14mm Samyang lens, which takes pin shark images and gives me a wide angle perspective.  I am also shooting more red images utilising some new software I have discovered.  As a professional fine art and event photographer working in Edinburgh, Glasgow and around Scotland, I think it is always important to try new approaches, no matter what genre you are in, whether you are a wedding photographer in Scotland, or a landscape photographer, or even a conference photographer.  I am using a manual 14mm lens which although forcing me to work harder, giving me more creative control over exposure and focusing and making me think a bit more.  Too much nowadays we are all capable of being a bit lazy and relying on the technology and auto focusing on modern advanced cameras, but you should take time and step back and think about the basic elements of photography.  I think the best photographers are the ones trained on film cameras, as they have had to learn about depth of field, focusing, exposure and other aspects of manual controls.  This enables them to rely on their instinct often in stressful situations, rather than fiddling about with the dials in modern digital cameras, often in conditions of low light.  I think everyone would benefit from whilst not necessarily going back to using film cameras, at least use manual exposure and manual focusing every now and again.   So anyway, some conferences on the the go soon, as the corporate and event photography Scotland season picks again.
