As an corporate event photographer in Edinburgh and the surrounding area, the outdoor sports and gala season is now in full swing. I was doing some newspaper photography for the Midlothian Advertiser at the weekend and had the pleasure of photographing the Newtongrange Gala day. A fantastic day was had by all and the weather held out well. I have a busy week or two ahead, with this week ending with some sports photography in Edinburgh at the European Touch Rugby Championships on Saturday. I have also been out and about with my new Fuji XT2 camera photographing landscapes in East Lothian. Landscape photography is all about luck, hard work and great light and I had it all last Wednesday night, with some stormy light and a partial sunset and a couple of surfers, one of whom I knew, Dan Waters, who was a great help in allowing me to constantly photograph him. I also managed a few infrared photographs, to add to my infrared photography in Scotland project. So it was a week of variety and to add to that variety, I am off to do some conference event photography in Edinburgh this week also.
So, its all happening, then of to Skye for a weeks holiday, where I will definitely take the opportunity to get some landscape shots.

A grand week of weather, starting with a corporate event commission with some enjoyable conference photography in Edinburgh and ending with some newspaper photography in East Lothian at the Haddington Festival. In between, I managed some infrared photography at Foxlake, East Lothian and the Bridges at South Queensferry, near Edinburgh. The weather was great for the Haddington Festival on saturday 3rd June, it was good to see all the costumes and everyone enjoying themselves. These events are great to photograph, there is so much variety, you get to photograph people in colourful costumes, music, dancers, runners and various other activities going on. It is particularly enjoyable when you have a strong connection to the community. The photo I have attached to this blog is from one of the musicians playing at the event, in this case Caitlyn Vanbech from Tranent, East Lothian, who also appeared on the X Factor recently. The quality of musicians I heard was pretty fantastic, well done guys.
Anyway, busy week ahead with some corporate headshot photography in Glasgow, more infrared photography in Scotland and finishing with some newspaper photography in Midlothian at the weekend, likely to be from the Gala Day season.

As you know I specialise in corporate conference and event photography in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland, but my other passion is infrared photography in Scotland. I have been documenting infrared images wherever I go - weather permitting and it isn't just now, as I look out the window at the clouds. A reminder that you always need a certain amount of sunshine. The other things, trees and foliage in general, clouds with blue skies and water also help. Probably two out the three I have mentioned will make a good image, provided the composition is ok. Here is a quick infrared photograph taken at Linlithgow, Scotland

A busy week again, with a corporate event photography commission, Edinburgh, some infrared photography, to my infrared photography Scotland project and finally ending in some newspaper and PR photography for the Midlothian Advertiser. As a corporate event photographer, I am honest about the fact that corporate event photography, particularly conferences is my specialist area and I love doing it. However, I do have a soft spot for fine art infrared photography and I also enjoy sports photography. This week in glorious sunshine I have been involved in motorsports photography in Fife, football in Bonnyrigg and cricket in Penicuik. I am getting used to the cricket photography now and starting to enjoy it, especially when you have time. It presents photographers with totally different challenges than other sports photography commissions and it can be difficult without a long lens, as you are a fair distance from the action. The constant changing positions of the batsman can also present challenges, as it can take a bit of time changing your location as a photographer, however I enjoy it, particularly when the weather is as nice as it was at the weekend.
Finally, this week, I just purchased a Fuji XT2 camera and I am looking forward to throwing myself into the mirrorless camera revolution, following on from my scrapyard photography project using the Fuji XPro 1. Lots more to look forward this week, with some conference photography in Edinburgh and landscape photography throughout Scotland.

As a professional corporate event photographer in Edinburgh, I am always being asked for advice on taking photographs at conferences and I have compiled a quick guide containing 5 of the most important areas to concentrate on for the conference photographer. There are of courser many aspects requiring consideration, but the 5 listed below are at least a good starter point:
1. If at all possible, know your venue inside out, particularly the natural and artificial light sources (at the time of day you will be photographing the event). Restrictions to certain areas etc. Knowing these things will help you gauge the equipment you require to bring and also to plan your day.
2. Determine in your clients requirements in advance and write them down ie timing - must do shots etc. Also determine if they have any restrictions on the way you work, this could include flash usage, people who dont want their photography taken, how long you are required to photograph
3. Practice every scenario in advance where possible, ask someone to go on stage with the lighting as it will be during the event - nothing should be a surprise to you, it is essential that you are prepared for every eventuality. I once photographed a conference in Scotland and learned 30 seconds before the start that they would be turning of all artificial lighting for the speakers. It was just enough time for me to change my settings, otherwise I could have messed up the first speaker shots and often they are the most important images.
4. Take only the gear you will require, don't overburden yourself with equipment. Taking only what you need will allow you to focus better on how you will take the best photos and you will save your back and reduce the chance of losing equipment. Event photography is all about preparation.
5. Back up all the memory cards at least twice and as soon as possible after the event, take a laptop if you are staying overnight. I could write an article on all the things that can and have gone wrong for photographers. If you have dual card slots, always use them, they saved me once when I was photographing a corporate conference in Scotland luckily I was using dual cards and at the end of conference I removed a faulty card from my camera, I wasnt stressed, as I had the back-up card, the price of an extra memory card is negligible in comparison to being sued by a client, or the business going down the tubes.
Anyway, happy conference shooting. Corporate photography is good fun really.
