Event Photography at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Hi Everyone

Its that time of the year again, where professional photographers living in Edinburgh have great opportunities to get some good stock event event photography images from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, or just as a means of practicing your craft.  I love it, but I must admit is becoming harder by the year due to the crowds and the number of photographers.  Nowadays more people have digital cameras and many have really expensive gear and I am not just talking about the professionals here.  I have noticed with the increasing numbers some do's and dont's and here is my opinion for what it is worth.  It is a free country and professional photographers done have more priority than other photographers, unless they have been hired by the photographer and only then should they be able to prioritise their position.  No matter how hard you want a photo, you have no given right to shove to the front, there are other photographers and people watching, especially children.   Don't keep asking them to pose, the performers will do this if they want to.  If you have taken loads of photos, offer to send them copies and get an email address and the final one and this one never fails to amaze me every year - try not to use long intimidating lenses, there is no space and it intimidates the performers.  Nowadays there are alternatives and mostly we aren't shooting in low light.  OK so that my grump for the day.  So whats on this week, more corporate event photography in Edinburgh, a headshot photography commission in Glasgow and I will be trying out my new Nikon D800 in infrared, photo attached, as part of my infrared photography in Scotland project.

Until next time

Kind Regards

Infrared Photography Edinburgh and Beyond

July 30, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone

What weather, wow.  This time of the year is usually quiet for conference photography in Edinburgh, and other corporate photoshoots, due to the holiday season, so I tend to do other stuff.  I was photographing a motor sport event at the weekend, which was good fun, but I have decided to talk about infrared photography.  I went to Edinburgh on friday, on what I felt was the hottest day in the city I can remember, although there may have been hotter ones, I am getting older.  This type of heat and bright sunshine does not lend itself to good photography normally, but for infrared, it is ideal.  The stronger the sun the better and if it is closer to midday, even better, so friday was ideal.  I also went a bit daft on the post processing for one or two of the shots.  Infrared photography can be a bit like photography on drugs, especially the colour stuff.  So I hope you enjoy the photos I have added to my site, one of them is attached to this blog.  of course, you can also keep it fairly conventional in black and white, which gives you a fairly contrasty image, one that is very difficult to achieve with normal black and white photography.   The photos are from the Festival Wheel at the centre of Edinburgh and the Scott Monument, scene of a scary engagement photoshoot I had last year.

Anyway, a busy week awaits, with some corporate headshots in Glasgow, followed by wedding photography in East Lothian at the weekend.

See you soon.

All the best

Kind Regards

Colin

Infrared Photography in Argyll and the Western Islands, Scotland

Infrared Photography in Oban, Argyll and Corporate Photography Scotland

Although I have just returned from a short holiday in Argyll in Scotland, I still have a lot to talk about.  Again a wide variety of photography in the last two weeks or so, ranging from the Supercars at East Fortune and Ingliston, near Edinburgh, to a corporate photoshoot for Mears Care Group in East Lothian, but I thought I would talk briefly about some infrared photos I took in the Isle of Kerrera, just of Oban in Argyll.  I didnt have a great deal of time for photography but managed a few shots on a walk with the family.  As a professional photographer working around Scotland, one of the most interesting subjects in infrared is abandoned vehicles and wrecked cars, also old buildings and boats, both metal and wood can look fairly striking in infrared.  the last time I went to the island I concentrated on the old wooden boat wreck but this time I thought I would vary it a bit.  No point in photographing the same thing over and over.  I spotted this old jeep and I thought it would make a good subject amongst the fern and grass.  Nothing in this photos was set up, this is the way it was, which is a personal preference of mine when it comes to landscape and photography in general, I much prefer uncontrolled environment images, even for weddings and other events.  So, let me know what you think.

Now that I am back to work, its more infrared photography, helped by this amazing weather we have been getting recently, followed buy a corporate photography event in Edinburgh and some food photography around Scotland.

So until next time.

All the best.

Kind Regards

Colin

Wedding Photography at Haddington in Blistering Sunshine

July 09, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

A wonderful day photographing for the wedding of Ryan and Loren at Haddington at the weekend.  The meal and excellent service was at the Waterside in Haddington, followed by a fantastic reception at the Maitlandfield Hotel.  Weather was great and Ryan and Loren were just fantastic to photograph.  As a wedding photographer, from Edinburgh, I am often asked about the most crucial aspects of photographing a wedding and obviously one of them is the weather.  Whilst nowone wants rain on their big day, the photographer doesn't really want bright sunshine midday either, due to the high contrast, squinting of the eyes and lens flare.  This made me think about the most important aspects of wedding photography and I have made a top 5, although there are hundreds more:

1)     Be prepared, make sure all your gear is fully charged and working, and that you have batteries back up case one of your cameras pack in (its not impossible, especially in rain).  Allow for the unthinkable happening, cause it probably will one day, ie car breaking down, someone nicking your camera, losing memory cards.  Try and relax a bit the day before, you will need all the energy you can get.

2)     Get to know the couple, the kind of people they are and act appropriately with their guests, this doesn't necessarily mean you have to be boring and stiff, try and relax and have a laugh with them

3)     Be prepared top take all kinds of photographs, no matter what type of photographer you are.  I am a reportage photographer from Edinburgh, but I still need to know how to take formal posed shots.

4)     Take chances and try new things, don't just stick to your formulae each wedding.  I now try and introduce some infrared photography to my weddings.  I convert to black and white, use low angles etc.

5)     In a way this is the most important one.  I also adopt it when photographing events and conferences throughout Scotland and I think it is crucial for all event photographers.  Whilst you must remain professional at all time, try and get into the flow of the event and almost become part of it.  Although you are not a guest, you will take better photos if you feel part of the crowd.

Anyway, until next time.  Some supercar photography at the weekend, followed by a corporate event photoshoot in Edinburgh and some more infrared photography in East Lothian.

All the best.
