Different Uses for Infrared Photography in Scotland

Hi Everyone

I have been shooting a lot of infrared photography in Scotland these days.  I am also half way through completing a manuscript for a book on infrared photography showcasing image in and around Scotland.  I thought I would look at a few myths of the genre.  Every type of photography has its cliched aspects and infrared is no different.  As a corporate event photographer in Scotland, people also have stereotypical ideas, particularly in relation to wedding photography and it is our job as photographers, to provide the public with an alternative modern view of photography.  In relation to infrared, I once had a client who loved my infrared work but was a bit wary of distributing it on the walls of his hotel, as it may have been too over the top with the white trees and weird spooky contrasting scenes.  Whilst this type of infrared photo can be created, the converted infrared camera can also be used to produce contrasty high dynamic range black and white photos that fit into a more conventional photographic genre. I particularly like using my infrared camera for this purpose. A converted infrared camera is after all, a very good specialist black and white camera - see what you think of the photo attached to this blog, only close inspection of the grass gives away that it is infrared.  Even colour infrared can be used in a realistic manner, depending on the filter you use, it can be a way of bringing out the blues in the sky and creating a nighttime effect.  Of course, I also like doing totally over the top infrared in both colour and black and white, but that's the subject of another blog.

Anyway, until next time.

Kind Regards

Infrared Photography Scotland Book

Hi Everyone

As you know I have been adding to my infrared photography in Scotland project, with a collection of images, which will be available as merchandise soon.  I am also in the process of completing a book on infrared photographs taken in Scotland and I will be negotiating with publishers.  This will be a book showcasing the images, with short descriptions of each photo and will include black and white and colour infrared.  It won’t be an instruction book,  although I will give some insight into how to. Instruct an infrared photo and the editing involved to form the final image.  A short description on how infrared photography can be applied to corporate photography commissions in Scotland will also be included in the book.  So watch this space for more information.

All the best.

Why I am an Infrared Photographer in Scotland

February 13, 2020  •  Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone

I have often been asked what got me into infrared and why I like it so much. You may be surprised by some of the reasons, so anyway here they are below:

1. I started shooting infrared in film as a student and always wanted to get back into it.  When converted digital cameras made it more accessible, I couldn't wait to return to the genre

2. You can shoot infrared in bright midday sunshine and still get dramatic results, none of this getting up at 5am for the best shots nonsense

3. Infrared is like film photography, you really don't know what the final result is going to be until you start editing

4. The final results take you to an enchanted place

5. There are no rules, you can go all whacky with the editing if you want to, or you can have a very good contrasty black and white photo with lots of structure

6. it's great fun and a little different from what is out there today, in an environment with millions of photos

7. The results make great fine art photos for exhibition purposes

8. It is a good extra project to have from the more conventional corporate and event photography commissions I do in Edinburgh and around Scotland, although I can also introduce it into my corporate work as an added extra for the client

9. It looks great on social media

10. It gives the world an insight into an entirely different genre of photography

So there you are, an some of the reasons why I am really into infrared photography

Kind Regards
