The importance of knowledge for the event and conference photographer in Edinburgh

November 07, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

For todays blog I am going to examine the importance of knowledge for the event and conference photographer in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland.  I will be looking at it from the perspective of mainly conference and event photographers in Scotland, but I will also touch on other genres of photography, such as infrared photography in Scotland, for instance. So, before we look at the important things to look for if you are hiring an event photographer in Scotland, have a look at some photos from my favourite genre of photography - conference photography Colin Wright Photography, Edinburgh and Glasgow corporate and event photographer | Edinburgh corporate and event photographer conference photography collection.

The importance of knowledge for the event and conference photographer in Edinburgh

1. Knowing your subject is crucial for photographers of all genres.  Take sport for example.  You will need to anticipate in a team game, where the ball will be coming next, in addition to the likelihood of players moving into position for the photograph.  Your own position as a photographer will also be very important.  If you have any choice in the matter, your knowledge will inform you of the best position.

2. Experience and knowledge of conferences helps you in anticipating the best times to photograph certain things. This will also influence your position and like sports photographers in Scotland, anticipation is key.

3. Knowledge of the genre will give you access to the right people.  When it comes to conference photography in Scotland, I know exactly who to speak to if I need anything on the day and communication skills are key, as you will know how to approach people in a moment of crisis.

4. Knowledge of the genre will give you confidence to do a good job.  I have photographed so many conferences in Edinburgh, which makes me very confident when I photograph an event in Scotland.

5. Knowledge of the ins and outs of the event, means you can concentrate on taking excellent photos and also you will enjoy the day.  I think I enjoy photographing conferences in Scotland and the North of England more than any other genre and this is partly due to my knowledge of the genre.

6. Knowledge of the genre helps you overcome crisis moments.  You will know what to expect.  A sports photographer in Scotland, will allow for all eventualities ie weather, extra time etc.

7.Your knowledge and enthusiasm for the genre will shine through in your photos and you will increase your chances of being hired.

8. For other genres of photography such as landscape, or my specialism, infrared photography, my knowledge of the type of weather required for the photoshoot is vital, as is the ability to visualise the final photo after editing.

9. If you like a certain area of photography, you will find it easier to take great photos.  I like football, rugby, golf and athletics and I find it easy to photograph these subjects, due to the knowledge I have acquired throughout the years.

10. Knowledge is usually gained through doing research and this will help you deal with all types of situations in your photography.  For instance, although I had played a lot of golf, when I was asked to take take photos for a golf event for the first time, it was the first time I had tackled a photoshoot on this particular subject, so I conducted extensive research on golf photography, which definitely helped me take better photos of the 2 day event.

Looking for an event photographer in Glasgow or Edinburgh

November 01, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

If you are looking for an event photographer in Glasgow or Edinburgh, then what are the main things you have to consider before you commit yourself to a particular professional photographer for your conference photography in Edinburgh for instance.  You have to start at the beginning, which is to try and decide what type of photos you want, this will depend on their eventual destination.  Are they for a promotional document, or for online publication, or are they for a magazine or journal, or event PR photography purposes.  The event photographer in Scotland who supplies photos to companies for events is very different from the wedding photographer in Scotland, or the birthday party photographer in Glasgow for instance.  So lets take a look at the things you have to consider before you commission an event or corporate photographer.

Things to consider before commissioning an event photographer in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scotland

1. As mentioned above, what is the intended destination for the photos, this will effect the kind of photos and thereafter, the type of corporate photographer you want to commission.

2. What style of photos are you looking for.  Check out websites online, does the style of photos suit your purpose, has the photographer been involved in major commissions, at high profile venues.  The images on this link give you an idea of the kind of photos available. Colin Wright Photography, Edinburgh and Glasgow corporate and event photographer | Commercial corporate event photographer Edinburgh Glasgow Scotland

3. How will the photos be delivered ie by link, the most common method nowadays, or by DVD/USB etc.  Wedding photographers, for instance will usually supply a USB stick with images and or possibly an album.

4. How soon can the photos be delivered.  This varies according to the kind of photo job involved.  A wedding photographer probably wont send the final photos until about a week or two after the event, but most conference photographers in Scotland will have to send the images fairly soon after the event, usually 2 or 3 days at the latest.

5. Can the photographer provide photos on the day for PR and social media purposes.  This is particularly important for conference photography, when some images are needed pretty quickly for PR publication.  Most good photographers in Scotland can provide this, particularly with the improvements to DSLR cameras that can download photos onto their phone using wi-fi or through other sources.

6. Is the person a member of an accredited photography organisation, such as the Royal Photographic Society The Royal Photographic Society - Home - RPS. or the Societies of Photographers.  This will usually be mentioned on their website and you can also check the websites of the relevant organisations.

The Society of Photographers – Helping photographers improve their photography and build their business - The Society of Photographers | International Photography Organisation (thesocieties.net)

7. Finally, will you be able to get on well with the photographer.  This is very important, the need for effective communication is paramount.  This is very important for conference photographers, who will be interacting with the delegates at your event and it is crucial that they do not disrupt the flow of the event and that they are friendly and co-operative with the delegates and speakers.

So, I hope that helps, happy snapping.

Until next time.

Car photography and the corporate event photographer Edinburgh Scotland

October 19, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone

Today I am going to look at car photography and the corporate event photographer Edinburgh Scotland and how photographing cars has been an integral part of my corporate commercial photography in Scotland.  Cars are great photographic subjects and they cross over many genres.  For wedding photographers in Scotland, the car photo is an important part of the day, assuming there are classic cars.  Even if the car is not spectacular and mostly they are to be honest, the bride entering the venue is a significant part of the day and the car will be photographed.

Other uses for car photography in Scotland

As an infrared photographer in Scotland, cars have featured in some of my most successful photos.  I once photographed scrap cars in infrared for an magazine and I sold some prints following an exhibition in East Lothian. Details of this event are included in this link: IN PICTURES: Dunbar photographer's infrared project shows East Lothian in a new light | East Lothian Courier.  Many of the photos were from a scrapyard project that I photographed, details of which can be found here: Colin Wright Photography, Edinburgh and Glasgow corporate and event photographer | Scrapyard Project.

I have photographed cars as a sports photographer in Scotland in motor sport events and also photographing supercars.  Vintage cars are also excellent to photograph and this was one of my favourite subjects before I became a professional commercial photographer in Scotland.  Cars were a popular subject when I was a newspaper photographer in Scotland.  I once photographed a mustang that featured in a Hollywood film and on a less glamourous note, I had to photograph illegally parked cars in Dalkeith for the local press, so what I here you say but this turned out to be one of my more risky photoshoots as the locals were none too happy.  I even photographed cars as a conference photographer in Edinburgh, Scotland, when important speakers or delegates arrived.  Again for the newspapers I photographed famous people in cars, often straining to get a recognisable image, but I had plenty of experience of this when photographing the supercars, as we had to make sure you could recognise the participants, who bought the photos.

So there you go, just some examples of car photography, one of my favourite subjects to photograph.  I will leave you with an infrared image of a car.  Infrared captures the metal brilliantly and increases the dynamic range, which makes for a dramatic image, especially with vintage or retro style cars.

So until next time.

Kind Regards

Colin

Improvisation and the commercial corporate conference photographer Edinburgh

October 10, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone

Today we are going to take a look at Improvisation and the commercial corporate conference photographer Edinburgh and how the best photographers are the ones who can adapt to their surroundings and can suddenly change their strategy at a moments notice.  Now you may say, shouldn't all photographers be able to do this and well, not always.  A studio photographer for instance can pre-determine the photographic environment in advance, including the lighting positioning of the props model etc.  Whereas a wedding photographer in Scotland, for instance will have to adapt to different lighting indoors and outdoors.  Most outdoor event photographers will have to adapt to changing lighting, weather conditions etc.  So here is a list of some of the things you will have to look out for if you need to improvise in your genre of photography.

Improvisation and the commercial corporate conference photographer Edinburgh

1. The weather.  As we all know especially for commercial photographers in Scotland, this can change very quickly and you have to be prepared with your equipment, clothing and lighting.

2. The client can change the brief on the day, to something totally different than you expected and it is your job to adapt.  This is especially true for conference photographers in Scotland, who may suddenly be asked to photograph group portraits or workshops without any notice.  Its all part of the job and what I like about uncontrolled environment photography.

3. The timings can change.  This could be anything from extra time during football photography, a politician arriving late during conference photography in Glasgow, to a cancellation of an event due to poor weather.  Always be prepared is the motto.

4. This one is a bit different but it can happen.  Your gear can pack in, the flash may break half way through a photoshoot, a lens may stop working, your batteries may run out.  This one, although a bit disruptive is the easiest one to fix.  Just take at least 2 of everything and in some cases 3 and plenty of batteries and memory cards and always record to 2 memory cards in case one breaks.

5. When you arrive at a venue the lighting may be all over the place and you only have a certain amount of control.  There may be chairs in the wrong position getting in the way of your photo, people sitting in your line of site, an area that the photographer cant access, this is very common in sports photography.  You may also have very little room to stand or take a group photo for instance, but it is up to you to try and change the environment to help you take great photos and if it is outwith your control, you just have to and here is that word again - improvise.

So everyone, hope that helps  So use your powers of improvisation to get these photos.  Until next time, here are some event photos from my sister website at www.edinburghphotographer.com. Music and Theatre Event Photography Scotland - Colin Wright Photography (edinburghphotographer.com).  There are also a variety of photos on this website to view at: Colin Wright Photography, Edinburgh and Glasgow corporate and event photographer | Welcome - corporate conference photographer Edinburgh Glasgow Scotland.
