First blog of the year.  Once again, the pandemic has affected event and corporate photography commissions for me in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland, so I thought I would take the opportunity to do some urban photography in Glasgow.  The rain stayed off for long enough and I spent an hour photographing traffic and landmarks in the city, mostly light trails. So this prompted me to draw up my Top 5 Tips for long city exposures, so here they are:

1.  Always take a tripod, or some sort of support, often I just place may camera on the street and if I have no tripod or balance on a fence etc.

2.  Experiment with your camera speeds ie all the way up to 1o or 15 seconds or more if you want to.

3.  Even though you are photographing motor light trails, pay attention to the composition and try and have an interesting building in the background.

4.  Although you want to photograph a night scene, try and do it while there is still some light in the sky.  This makes the sky more interesting and you don't just have a black background.

5.  Experiment with lenses, my favourite is a manual ultra wide angled lens, as I like to shoot low and include plenty of foreground interest detail.
