Today I am going to briefly look at some editing tips for the event photographer in Scotland. Of course a lot is dependant on the timescales for completion of the photos by the client, but there are still some basic rules that would help any corporate and conference photographer Scotland. So here we go:
1. Don’t try any new software or routine when you are editing a corporate photoshoot. Practice on any new systems prior to any commissioned work.
2. Make sure your equipment is all ready prior to the event ie lots of hard drive memory, pc or Mac working fast enough, internet ok, software updated.
3. Go through all the photos and work through images that could be included in the final batch for the client but don’t do any complicated editing yet, just keep the hopeful ones in a folder. Then you want to do some basic editing ie exposure, colour balance, crop.
4. The next stage is identifying any specific photos from your conference photography in Edinburgh and carry out the more complicated edits ie black and white conversions, removal of any unwanted objects, enhancing the portraits etc.
5. Check your final batch and remove any images that are similar or not good enough, then sharpen images if required. I use Photoshop, Nik filters by DXO and Canon software, but it’s important that you establish a routine. You also need to try and limit the time you spend editing. Time is money and the object should be to get it right when you take the photo. You can’t spend hours and hours editing and it’s not necessary if you are organised enough.

1. To be organised with their time/equipment etc. Being aware of the timing of the event including the speakers/workshops etc is vital and it goes without saying conference photographers should arrive early.

3. The skill to take high quality conference and event photos, which should be apparent from the photographers website. Today I am going to be looking at considerations for organisations about to hire a corporate event photographer in Scotland. Most photographers should be able to do a wide range of photography, but they probably specialise in one area of work, for me as a conference and event photographer in Edinburgh and Glasgow, I tend to focus, if you will excuse the pun, on awards events, conferences and wedding photography in Scotland, however, I have worked in a wide range of photographic genres and I think this is important for companies choosing an event photographer in Scotland. Experience as a newspaper photographer in Scotland for 10 years gave me a good grounding in general photography, it was also vital in enabling me to respond to unexpected crisis at any given time and this can also be very useful at conferences and events. As a landscape photographer I am able to photograph effectively outdoors and I can provide a quality image of the building and guests outdoors, I can also supply infrared photographs in addition the images I already provide. The position for wedding photographers is similar, they should also be versatile and able to take on a variety of work to enable them to respond to the unexpected. A good wedding photographer nowadays will also be able to do fashion photography. Sports photographers in Scotland will also be able to adapt their skills to events. In fact you tend to find there are 2 different types of photographers, those who work in a controlled environment ie studio photographers who set up lighting and create artificial props and backgrounds for the photoshoot and uncontrolled environment photographers, who deal with the situation as it is without having any control over what happens next or the lighting for that matter.
So should I hire a general photographer for our conference in Edinburgh.
Well that depends on your event or need for the photography, I would say yes for conference and event photography, weddings and PR work, but for still life, portrait or food photography for instance, you may be fine with a specialist.

As a conference and event photographer in Edinburgh, I am often asked how I plan for conference photography
in Scotland and my answer is that I complete a comprehensive plan for each photoshoot which tends to be very similar no matter whether it is for wedding photography, award ceremonies, or any other event photography. We will use a typical conference photographers plan for a conference in Scotland as an example below:
The Photo Plan for an Edinburgh conference photographer
1. Take a clear note of the venue, location, rooms etc.
2. You should include the contact person for the photoshoot, together with back-up contacts, with phone numbers, email addresses etc.
3. The timings and names of all the people involved. In the case of conference photographer for example this will be the speakers and when they start, along with any presentations or awards.
4. Any special type of photographs required ie all delegates, workshops etc. This could also include formal group photos or awards. Make sure you get the names of all this involved, it is far more professional to approach people if you know their name.
5. A note of anyone who doesn't want their photo taken and make sure you are aware of who this is.
6. Anything they don't want you to photograph ie specific workshop, or if they don't want you to use flash.
7. Go over the plan carefully with your main contact and ask them exactly what they require from you.
8. How and when the final photos will be delivered ie by link, USB or DVD.

I have photographed a full 2 day conference in Manchester when I was not allowed to use flash, this was a good few years ago before the improvements in lo light photography, but I prepared well and the photos were great. At least I knew the rules before I started. You should let the corporate photographer know the timetable of the photoshoot and devise a plan detailing exactly what you require and at what time. After the event you should also let the photographer know when you need the final images and in what format.
